How To Grow Proteas In A Pot

Step 1

Choose a pot that is at least twice the size of the selected plant with an outlet hole for drainage. Position in the garden that receives full sun, minimum 6 hours per day.

Step 2

Fill the pot with a native quality potting mix, such as Rocky Point Premium Potting mix. Soil is very important and if you use phosphorus soils (with manure) your plant will die.

Step 3

Carefully remove the plant from the pot ensuring not to disturb any of the roots.

Step 4

Position in hole and backfill with native potting mix, gently firming down. Water in well.

Step 5

Mulch with an organic mulch, such as pine chips, sugar cane, macadamia nut shells or pea straw ensuring to keep it away from the trunk.

Step 6

Feed in autumn and spring with a good native fertiliser.  DO NOT use normal fertiliser.

Step 7

Water your Protea. For the first 3 years, water your protea at least 5-7 x per week in spring/summer (Queensland October – February) and 5 x per week in the cooler months.  If you don’t water your plant, it will die, especially King Proteas.
